Sibelius USA, Inc. Newsletter - September, 2005
Welcome to the September issue of Gracenotes-our e-mail newsletter to Sibelius enthusiasts in North, Central and South America. As we begin the new school semester, we've put together a well-rounded issue that should prove valuable to students, educators and musicians alike.
We're leading off this month with a look at Georgia's Gwinnett County school district and Grayson High School's state-of-the-art music lab. This is one of the most advanced facilities in the region-and one key to its success is the use of Sibelius, Instruments, Auralia and Compass. Next up, product manager Daniel Spreadbury takes us through our third installment of "What's New in Sibelius 4," with an overview of the new Worksheet Creator feature, which is going to be a massive help to music educators everywhere.
This month's featured Sibelius user is legendary Jazz arranger and instrumentalist Gil Goldstein, who took time out of his hectic schedule to discuss his most recent project with trumpet virtuoso Chris Botti, and to speak to us about the role Sibelius plays in his work. We are also delighted to announce two new additions to the family of Sibelius products: namely the Garritan Personal Orchestra Sibelius Edition and the Sibelius Rock and Pop Collection. Both will be available in November. Please read below for details.
On a closing note, I'd like to send a special thank you to the thousands of GN readers who responded so rapidly to news of Michael Brecker's critical medical condition. We are sure he and his family are appreciative, and will keep up our efforts to help Michael any way we can. If you missed last month's article and haven't heard of Michael's battle with MDS (myelodysplastic syndrome) and his urgent need for a matching stem cell transplant, please visit his website and see how you can help: www.michaelbrecker.com.
Thanks, as always, for your input. We encourage you to e-mail us at gracenotes@sibelius.com to share your thoughts about past, present or future editions of Gracenotes. Happy reading!

Suburban Atlanta School Uses Sibelius Software To Make the Most of a High-Tech Music Lab
A different kind of laboratory: Grayson High School instructor Tim Johnson (pictured) and Music Technology Program students.
|
Gwinnett County Public Schools, the largest district in the state of Georgia, has made major investments in its fine arts and technology programs as part of a vision to become a world-class school system. A prime example is found at Grayson High School, where a Technical Educational Program draws students from across the district for courses in culinary arts, travel and tourism, criminology, animal husbandry and television production.
Naturally, Grayson's Music Technology Program is also state-of-the-art, and includes all the tools necessary to train students for future occupations in the music industry. Teacher Tim Johnson commands a 25-station learning environment equipped with Korg Triton keyboards, DigiDesign mixing consoles, a Korg GEC lab controller system and an overhead digital projector.
Johnson uses a variety of key software to tie all that hardware together and to guide his students through the world of music, from the basics-musical instruments, genres, ear training, harmony, theory and composition-to recording and mastering a finished product. Each station's Macintosh G5 computer includes DigiDesign Pro Tools, Mark of the Unicorn Digital Performer, and a selection of Sibelius software that includes Sibelius, Instruments, Auralia and Compass.

What's new in Sibelius 4: Worksheet Creator by Daniel Spreadbury, Product Manager for Sibelius 4 One of the most rewarding aspects of my role as Product Manager for Sibelius is meeting Sibelius users and talking to them about what they do with the software, what they'd like to be able to do more easily, and how they'd like to see it develop in the future. When we were planning which features to add in Sibelius 4, I was lucky enough to talk to hundreds of users of all kinds, including dozens of educators.
What they told me was that they find Sibelius an incredible resource for teaching and learning, but that producing classroom materials could be something of a chore. Worksheets often require not only a great deal of research in order to produce suitable exercises, but also need some advanced layout and formatting to make them look good. Despite Sibelius' easy and flexible methods for laying out pages, some teachers told me that they often resorted to quickly scribbling out their worksheets on score paper, bypassing Sibelius altogether. This got us thinking: we already provide a range of software for music educators of all kinds, including best-in-class packages like Sibelius Instruments and Sibelius Compass. What if we were to add educational content to Sibelius itself, complementing and supporting the curricula of our existing range of products, and give teachers a super-easy way to create a comprehensive range of teaching materials, taking care of both the required research and the difficulty of producing good-looking worksheets quickly? So was born Sibelius 4's Worksheet Creator feature! To read the entire article Click here. Sibelius Streamlines The Process For Arranger Gil Goldstein
World-class arranger/instrumentalist Gil Goldstein will attest to the fact that advances in technology have been nothing short of a godsend to music preparation, an integral-albeit often time-consuming-part of the creative process. The creative process is not without its technological tools, and among Goldstein's personal favorites are his Wacom tablet and Sibelius software. "I started using Sibelius around nine years ago," notes Goldstein, who maintains an active schedule of arranging, producing, performing, teaching and film scoring. "I'm embarrassed to say-although it's a great testament to the product-that I was still using Version 1 until recently. I'm now on Version 3, and will soon upgrade to Version 4. The Wacom tablet is the perfect interface in that it gives me the illusion that I'm using a pencil and paper, especially when working away from the piano." Working remotely is de rigueur for Goldstein, who finds himself on the road frequently and doing a good bit of arranging on planes and in hotel rooms. "It's wonderful to be able to complete a sketch, enter it into Sibelius and listen back instantly," he says. "What's better is being able to write and prepare parts on the road, and have them meet me somewhere." To read the entire article Click here. |

SoCAL Sibelius Users Group Formed |
The first meeting of the Southern California Sibelius Users Group took place at the beginning of the month at the NoHo Arts Center in North Hollywood. Already approximately 90 members strong, 80 Sibelius users attended the first gathering. Spearheaded by a steering committee consisting of Doug LeBow, Chairman; Secretary, Stephen Cohn; Education Committee Chair, Paul Ludden and Treasurer and Member at Large, Jamie Robertson, the evening’s main event featured a presentation by Sibelius Western Region Manager, Bruce Munson, on the new features of Sibelius 4. The group has also created a SCSUG forum on Yahoo with Sibelius 4 product manager, Daniel Spreadbury and Sibelius USA Technical Support Manager, Tom Betts, joining in. If you are interested in joining the SCSUG, please contact Stephen Cohn at: scohnmusic@earthlink.net. Perhaps you are interested in forming a Sibelius users group in your area? If so, drop us an email at editor@gracenotes.com and we'll be happy to assist in getting you started. Hints & Tips for Sibelius Users |
|
NOTE: We’re re-submitting Bruce Munson’s formatting tutorial as it was improperly linked on our website (our fault) to a more abbreviated Hints & Tips document. This is a fantastically useful tutorial however, so we apologize to our readers, and hope you’ll go and take a look at this. Bruce did a great job on this one. And yes, we’ll be updating this to Sibelius 4 in the coming weeks. Sibelius 3 Formatting By Bruce C. Munson |
When working in Sibelius, the software's auto-formatting features are at work behind the scenes, always making your scores look good. This is because Sibelius would like you to concentrate on your music making rather than on constantly grappling with formatting issues while you are inputting notes. Therefore, it is advisable that you input all of your notes and markings before you make any formatting adjustments. Usually, Sibelius' auto-formatting creates beautiful layouts, so you need not make any additional formatting adjustments. Occasionally you will want to make some adjustments to the layout, and again, it is better and easier to do this after you have finished inputting. However, there are times when you want to format your score before inputting notes. This would be the case with format-intensive layouts like worksheets and perhaps lead sheets. |
