Gracenotes

Sibelius USA, Inc. Monthly Newsletter May 2005

Hello and welcome to the May issue of Gracenotes - our email newsletter to Sibelius enthusiasts in North, Central and South America.

We have a lot to talk about in our Sibelius in the Classroom section. We begin with an overview of DeWayne Roberson’s successful “Soundscapes” music program at Watertown High in Wisconsin, followed by an update on the Vermont MIDI Project, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary and getting ready for Opus 11 – the annual professional performance and live recording of student compositions.  The Technology Institute for Music Educators (TI:ME) has announced its Summer Workshops.  If you’re an educator who is not already a member of TI:ME, we strongly recommend you look into the valuable resources they provide.

We close out our Sibelius in the Classroom section with a quick overview of this past week’s “JaZzcap” showcase and a fantastic article by our friends at SBO Magazine that focuses on Sibelius user and teacher Daniel Levin. His use of music technology inspires students who are largely at “poverty-level or below” at Amistad Academy in New Haven, Connecticut.

As we bid farewell to the legendary jazz bassist Percy Heath, we also look forward to the upcoming efforts of the generation he inspired and influenced.  Many of the present and future greats riding in Percy’s wake are headed towards San Francisco for the remaining two months of the SFJAZZ Spring season, and as you might expect, many of them are members of the Sibelius community. There’s also an interesting review of G7 in the May edition of JazzTimes and last but not least, a very helpful new Hints & Tips document about managing bar numbers in Sibelius 3.

Once again, we are grateful for your input and encourage you to e-mail us at gracenotes@sibelius.com to share your thoughts about past, present or future editions of Gracenotes.

Wisconsin Music Students Get Creative with Sibelius and Compass Software
Teacher DeWayne Roberson Breaks New Ground with "Soundscapes" Music Technology Class

The town of Watertown, Wisconsinsits on the banks of the Rock River, and at Watertown High School, music teacher DeWayne Roberson looks over the shoulders of students in the computer lab as they find new ways to explore music using the Sibelius notation and composition software programs.

Kaitryn Thoma

Watertown Sophomore Kaitryn Thoma

Budding artists throughout the Watertown High music program can be found using Sibelius in ways you might expect: the choir director uses it to create accompaniment CDs for individual vocal practice and independent study students use it for composition and arranging. But it's in the school's innovative one-semester music and technology class, "Soundscapes," that the software really comes to life.

Amistad Academy's Daniel Levin Improving Lives Through Music Education
By Christian Wissmuller, SBO Magazine

In the April issue of School Band & Orchestra, Editor Christian Wissmuller spoke with Daniel Levin, music teacher at New Haven’s Amistad Academy. A flagship school for Achievement First—an enterprise which aims to help urban students achieve academic and personal excellence—Levin is using Sibelius to (among other things) create customized practice tools for his students to take home and work with.

“I also use Sibelius during class when we are learning a new part,” states Levin. “I hook my computer up to a keyboard amp and play the arrangement and the kids play along with the computer. I can do it lots of ways, such as under tempo, over tempo, et cetera. I try turning the computer down as the students are playing, like how a parent takes their hand off a bike seat when teaching their daughter or son to ride by themselves; they start with the computer, then I wean them off of it.”

Farewell to Bassist Percy Heath

Percy Heath
Percy Heath

Percy Heath, one of the greatest jazzmen of all time, passed away this past week succumbing to bone cancer at a hospital in Southampton, New York. He was 81.

Heath made an everlasting entry into the annals of jazz history through 40 years of ground-breaking work with the Modern Jazz Quartet. He was the last living member of an ensemble that proved influential to untold musicians who aspired to replicate not only the MJQ sophistication but the precise, structured but hard-swinging bop style that epitomized their playing from the early 50’s through the mid 70’s.

After MJQ disbanded, Percy and his brothers, saxophonist Jimmy Heath and drummer Albert "Tootie" Heath, formed one of the greatest jazz families of all time: The Heath Brothers.  The list of personal achievements and great players who Percy worked with and influenced goes far beyond the scope of this humble newsletter, but there’s little doubt that Percy’s departure leaves a great void in the jazz world and we’re awfully sorry to see him go.

Heath is survived by his brothers, his wife and his sons, Percy III, Jason and Stuart. We’d like to extend our heartfelt sympathies to his family, friends and fans everywhere.

SFJAZZ Renowned Sibelius Users to Appear at Upcoming SFJAZZ Spring Concerts

John Santos

John Santos and the Machete Ensemble will play at SFJAZZ Saturday May 7

Michael Brecker
Sax Great and Sibelius User
Michael Brecker

SFJAZZ continues with one of the most exciting San Francisco Jazz Festival Spring seasons in recent memory. Every day more amazing jazz artists are using Sibelius making it hard for us to look through the SFJAZZ roster and not be proud of the association. We mentioned artistic director Joshua Redman and legendary arranger Gil Goldstein in the February issue of Gracenotes, but failed to point out some other highly significant Sibelius users (such as Larry Coryell) who appeared in March and April concerts.

Other talented Sibelius users who will play during the final two months of the Spring festival include John Santos and the Machete Ensemble, which includes heavyweight players Wayne Wallace and John Calloway.  Bass great Buster Williams is featured in the star-studded Steve Turre Band, playing “The Music of Rahsaan Roland Kirk.”  And speaking of stars, there are very few sax players who’d dare to take the stage alongside Michael Brecker, but if anyone could handle it, it would be fellow monsters Joe Lovano and Dave Liebman who together will lead The Coltrane Project: Saxophone Summit.

Joshua Redman is yet another monster sax man who will be featured in several of the upcoming shows, including an appearance with McCoy Tyner and then with the eponymous Joshua Redman’s Elastic Band.

G7 Kontakt Edition Reviewed in JazzTimes

In the May issue of JazzTimes magazine, reviewer Russell Carlson calls G7 Kontakt Edition’s interface “as user-friendly as I can imagine any program like this being.” G7 Kontakt builds on the successful components of the original program, designed to provide players of fretted instruments an exciting way to produce and convert guitar tablature, to create a new software solution for creative guitarists and songwriters.

“Notes played on a MIDI guitar track smoothly in this updated program,” Carlson says. Kontakt edition includes an array of enhancements and brand new features, including access to a sample library with many stunning real sounds—drum kits, percussion and other instruments—and the ability to burn songs to CD.

Hints & Tips for Sibelius Users

Managing Bar Numbers in Sibelius 3 (New this Month!)

By Bruce C. Munson

Bar numbers appear automatically in Sibelius 3. By default, they appear at the beginning of each system in both scores and extracted parts. This default frequency can be changed to your preference. For example, what if you wanted the bar numbers in the score to appear centered in every bar? What if you also wanted the bar numbers to appear in the piccolo staff (for the winds) the timpani staff (for the percussion) and the first violin staff (for the strings)? Let’s do one more thing: let’s place the bar numbers below the bottom of the bottom staff as well. This tutorial will take you through the steps to do just that (and more), and by doing so, you will understand the techniques of bar number customization in Sibelius 3.
