Gracenotes

Sibelius USA, Inc. Newsletter – June, 2005

Hello and welcome to the June issue of Gracenotes - our e-mail newsletter to Sibelius enthusiasts in North, Central and South America.

For the music educators and students who are reading this issue and preparing for summer vacation, we hope you’ll enjoy two stories that feature ground-breaking music programs: a middle school music class in Aurora, Colorado experiencing the power of Sibelius and, as we mentioned in our January issue, Sibelius is a sponsor of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest Educational Tour Bus, and the crew were kind enough to put together a video about how they and the students that come aboard are using Sibelius. You can link to the video through the story.

This month we feature two Sibelius users: accomplished classical pianist, winner of this year’s National Chopin Competition, and Star Doctoral Fellow at The Juilliard School of Music Mei-Ting Sun tells us how he has been using Sibelius for composition creation. And what would summer be without concerts and festivals? We are proud to feature the upcoming album by jazz saxophonist extraordinaire Bill Evans, whom I was fortunate to see just this past weekend.

We have also included a tip on an interesting piano curriculum you may want to check out by Elise Beckett Russell entitled The Piano Lesson.

The Hits & Tips column has long been a favorite of Gracenotes readers, but many of you may have missed the addition of a new H&T document that focuses on managing bar numbers in Sibelius. This has been widely requested, so we thought we should mention it again.

We will also keep you up-to-date on training dates, shows and events.

As always, we appreciate your input and encourage you to e-mail us at gracenotes@sibelius.com to share your thoughts about past, present or future editions of Gracenotes. Happy Reading!

Sibelius 3 Brings Music Educator and Band Students to “The Edge”

—Teacher DeWayne Roberson Breaks New Ground with "Soundscapes" Music Technology Class—

J. Franklin Horn and Fellow Collaborators Rehearse

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.—When a young daughter took the simple step of following along with her father at the piano, music educator J. Franklin Horn had an epiphany: create a collaborative composition project for the members of his band at South Middle School in Aurora, Colorado. A few months and many bursts of inspiration later, “The Edge” was born, with help from Sibelius 3 notation software.

Horn recently shared his experience, along with excerpts from an article he has submitted for publication, “At the Edge of Awareness: Collaborative Composition in a Middle School Band Room.”

John Lennon Educational Tour Bus' Interactive Video Gives Inside Glimpse at How Sibelius is Used by Crew and Students

Sibelius Stars in JLSC Video

When the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus visits schools across the U.S., students come aboard to create their own music and are then able to record and take a CD of their finished masterpiece away with them. Sibelius is there to support their creative songwriting process as the bus crew conducts and records the educational performance sessions that take place.

If you read the January Gracenotes e-blast, you’ll remember the announcement of our new association with the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus. To catch a glimpse of the bus and how Sibelius is used, watch the interactive video at http://media.jlsc.com/schedule/2005/viewer.php?file=Sibelius-Promo.mp4.

Meteoric Piano Talent Mei-Ting Sun Chooses Sibelius

Mei-Ting Sun Performs at Yamaha piano

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.—Piano virtuoso and Sibelius user Mei-Ting Sun came to New York from Shanghai at nine years old. In 1996, he was named one of the “Musicians of the Year” by the Village Voice for his performance of the Op. 10 Etudes of Chopin. At age 14, his performance of Ravel’s Concerto in G at Alice Tully Hall was praised by the New York Times as a “stunningly fluid reading.”

Now 24, Sun has toured Spain, France, Italy, China and Japan and played with symphonies in Canada, Hong Kong and Macau. He has been featured on WQXR (NY) Classical Radio’s “Young Artist Showcase” and NPR’s “Performance Today” program and was the 2002 Winner of the International Piano-e-Competition.

In March, Sun won the 2005 National Chopin Piano Competition, and in September he will travel to Warsaw to represent the United States in the International Chopin Competition.

His first prize from the National Chopin Competition also includes $20,000 in cash; a June 13 performance at the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall; and a 20-city stateside tour, arranged by the competition, which includes a June 12 recital at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. Currently, Sun is a C.V. Star Doctoral Fellow at The Juilliard School of Music.

Sun’s notation software of choice? Sibelius.

From “Soulbop” to “Soulgrass”, Famed Saxman Bill Evans Gets There With Sibelius

Bill Evans

Bill Evans, a Grammy award-winning jazz saxophonist with 13 CDs to date, played to sold out audiences this past week at Yoshi’s Jazz club in Oakland, California. Evans had just wrapped up his 2005 European tour and was in Oakland with an amazing lineup of musicians to promote his upcoming CD Soulgrass, a mixture of bluegrass, jazz and soul.

The virtuoso sax player credits Sibelius software as playing an integral part in creating Soulgrass, “(Sibelius) has become an invaluable tool for me, especially when I’m in the process of recording a new CD.” Evans adds in his typical self-effacing manner that “Sibelius was so easy to use, even I could be an expert.” (This despite musical talent and technique that can only be described as frightening).

Hints & Tips for Sibelius Users

Managing Bar Numbers in Sibelius 3 (One More Time!)

By Bruce C. Munson

Bar numbers appear automatically in Sibelius 3. By default, they appear at the beginning of each system in both scores and extracted parts. This default frequency can be changed to your preference. For example, what if you wanted the bar numbers in the score to appear centered in every bar? What if you also wanted the bar numbers to appear in the piccolo staff (for the winds), the timpani staff (for the percussion), and the first violin staff (for the strings)? Let’s do one more thing: let’s place the bar numbers below the bottom of the bottom staff as well. This tutorial will take you through the steps to do just that (and more). By doing so, you will understand the techniques of bar number customization in Sibelius 3.
