Wolf Marshall Charts Success With Sibelius G7 Software

The founder and original editor-in-chief of GuitarOne magazine, Wolf Marshall is a well-respected and prolific performer, author, instructor and columnist who has been influential in music education since the early 1980s.

As the leading impressionist in the industry, emulating the styles of the greats with spot on accuracy, he’s also known as “the Rich Little of guitar” – not only does he perform the most challenging licks of players like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, Eric Clapton and countless others on his best-selling book/CD packages, but he explains and demonstrates their special techniques and approaches to guitar students and fans globally.

One of the tools Marshall relies upon to generate the tablature for such popular lessons is G7 from Sibelius. “I can play notes right off the on-screen fretboard into tablature,” Marshall says, “ and in one step, generate both the standard notation and idiomatic fingerings. I don’t have to do any manipulation later; I’m literally playing the software like an instrument. That’s a milestone.”

What’s New in Sibelius 4: Digital Video

Sibelius is already used to produce music for dozens, if not hundreds, of major motion pictures and TV shows every year, from Shrek 2 to The Simpsons. But up until the arrival this summer of Sibelius 4, composing to picture has always been a time-consuming process involving multiple programs on very tight deadlines – it is not as glamorous a profession as it might sound! Yet this doesn’t stop many student composers wanting to move into the world of composing for film and TV; after all, for many young composers this is the first direct and powerful contact with “classical” music that they experience.

Sibelius 4’s Digital Video support is designed to help composers at both ends of the spectrum: it engages student composers, reinforcing the kinds of working methods that are needed to work professionally in the field, and adds another powerful tool to the arsenal of the professional film and TV composer. Plus, of course, it’s fun!

What’s New in Sibelius 4: Webcast Seminar with Ben Finn

Sibelius co-founder Ben Finn gave a webcast seminar last week in order to introduce the new features of Sibelius 4 to selected members of the press.  The response for Ben’s presentation was overwhelmingly positive, and we’d like to invite all of our users to view the recorded version.  We used WebEx technology to present the event live, and as there is a time delay inherent in any webcast (latency between graphics and sounds), the presentation is not always as smooth as we all know the application to be.  There is of course no one more qualified to speak about the new features in Sibelius 4 however, and so we trust you’ll enjoy the event.

A Desperate Situation for Michael Brecker

As mentioned in the intro, Michael Brecker is seriously ill and his wife and management recently put out a call for help. They are trying to find a stem cell donor who matches Michael’s type – but to no avail thus far. There is comprehensive information about Michael’s condition and the stem cell donor process (which apparently has become far less intrusive than it once was – tantamount to giving blood in fact).  We’re including a portion of Susan Brecker’s original letter and a portion of the FAQ’s available on Michael’s website.  Please read below, send positive thoughts Michael’s way - and help if you can.

A Letter From Susan Brecker

Dear Family and Friends,
My husband, Michael Brecker, has been diagnosed with MDS (myelodysplastic syndrome) and it’s critical that he has a bone marrow or blood stem cell transplant (which has nothing to do with embryonic stem cells). The initial search for a donor, including Michael’s siblings and children, has not resulted in a suitable match. We now hope to have as many people tested as possible that share a similar genetic background as my husband. There are some important points to understand concerning this process.
