Gracenotes
Sibelius USA, Inc. Newsletter - August, 2005
Welcome to the August issue of Gracenotes—our e-mail newsletter to Sibelius enthusiasts in North, Central and South America. As we gear up for another school year, this edition of Gracenotes features some newsworthy and valuable tools for Sibelius users. In our second installment of “What’s New in Sibelius 4,” product manager Daniel Spreadbury takes us through our exclusive and very exciting Digital Video feature, which is invaluable for composers of film and television as well as educators and students. We would also like to invite you to view a recorded Sibelius 4 webcast seminar that our founder Ben Finn gave last week. Please read below for details.
Multi-decade guitar virtuoso and jazz-rock fusion pioneer Larry Coryell sits down for an exclusive interview on his use of Sibelius and a career that has produced more than 70 albums. Larry discusses his use of Sibelius for an instructional book, Larry Coryell’s Power Jazz Guitar: Extending Your Creative Reach, the second such work to his credit.
There have been a lot of emails circulating about the medical condition of Michael Brecker, who has been diagnosed with MDS (myelodysplastic syndrome), and is in desperate need to find a stem cell donor with a matching tissue type. Unfortunately his siblings and children do not match. This is a true life and death situation, and we urge you to either read below for details, or go directly to Michael’s website to see if and how you might be able to save his (or another’s) life. www.michaelbrecker.com.
World-class drummer/composer Carl Allen is not only a respected player, but an in-demand music educator. Read what he has to say in the “Sibelius Swings” story.
Also in this issue, GuitarOne magazine founder Wolf Marshall, an internationally acclaimed guitarist and educator, talks about why he relies on Sibelius G7 software for his guitar lessons.
As usual, we have also included an updated Hints & Tips column.
Again, thanks for your input, and we encourage you to e-mail us at [email protected] to share your thoughts about past, present or future editions of Gracenotes. Happy reading!

What's New at Sibelius
What’s New in Sibelius 4: Digital Video
Sibelius is already used to produce music for dozens, if not hundreds, of major motion pictures and TV shows every year, from Shrek 2 to The Simpsons. But up until the arrival this summer of Sibelius 4, composing to picture has always been a time-consuming process involving multiple programs on very tight deadlines – it is not as glamorous a profession as it might sound! Yet this doesn’t stop many student composers wanting to move into the world of composing for film and TV; after all, for many young composers this is the first direct and powerful contact with “classical” music that they experience. |
What’s New in Sibelius 4: Webcast Seminar with Ben Finn Sibelius co-founder Ben Finn gave a webcast seminar last week in order to introduce the new features of Sibelius 4 to selected members of the press. The response for Ben’s presentation was overwhelmingly positive, and we’d like to invite all of our users to view the recorded version. We used WebEx technology to present the event live, and as there is a time delay inherent in any webcast (latency between graphics and sounds), the presentation is not always as smooth as we all know the application to be. There is of course no one more qualified to speak about the new features in Sibelius 4 however, and so we trust you’ll enjoy the event. |

Guitar Master Larry Coryell Loves Neatness and Speed of Sibelius
Larry Coryell knows a little something about musical innovation: as a multi-decade “guitar god” who pioneered jazz-rock fusion, he’s recorded more than 70 albums and left his mark on a generation of artists. So it’s no surprise to find him embracing another innovation, Sibelius, to harness his creative output. |
Sibelius “Swings” For Carl Allen
The omnipresence of swing is a recurring theme in the music and life of world-class drummer/composer Carl Allen. |
A Desperate Situation for Michael Brecker |
As mentioned in the intro, Michael Brecker is seriously ill and his wife and management recently put out a call for help. They are trying to find a stem cell donor who matches Michael’s type – but to no avail thus far. There is comprehensive information about Michael’s condition and the stem cell donor process (which apparently has become far less intrusive than it once was – tantamount to giving blood in fact). We’re including a portion of Susan Brecker’s original letter and a portion of the FAQ’s available on Michael’s website. Please read below, send positive thoughts Michael’s way - and help if you can. Our thoughts and wishes for a speedy recovery go out to Michael and his family. |

FAQs About Stem Cell Transplants |
Susan Brecker’s heartfelt plea elicited an outpouring of support for Michael—and an outpouring of questions. As there is outdated and conflicting information on the web concerning the stem cell transplant process that can assist Michael and so many others, we assembled a list of frequently asked questions—a hybrid of material found throughout the web in addition to new information. Before contacting Michael’s management office with your questions, please review the following. Thank you for your support. |
